Couples often create patterns of relating to one another that end up creating distress and distancing. Each person in a relationship comes with their own unique thoughts, feelings, perspectives, experiences and ways of relating. These differences can create conflict and become "stuck" places where there isn't movement forward. Partnership asks each of us to grow and develop emotionally. We often cannot keep using our old ways of relating when they are not working. Couples therapy takes courage and a willingness to face our own areas of needed growth as well as the reality of what it takes to create a life with someone else who often has different ways of seeing the world. Sometimes facing reality means the end of a relationship, and sometimes it means growing together to create something new. Infidelity and broken trust requires radical alterations in the relationship that include; boundaries, truth telling and other agreements that protect the relationship. Couples therapy does not always feel good in the beginning, but it can lead to increased closeness, authenticity and growth.
